Solar Space Heating System in Virginia

This is a very nicely planned and executed solar heating project in Virginia. Lots of detail on all phases of the project with sections on planning, installation, costs, and performance.

The system is modeled after our $2K system, but with many adaptations and innovations to suit Kevin's home and climate.

Thanks very much to Kevin for documenting the project and sending it in!

Nearly vertical collectors positioned for good solar access.

  1. How much did it cost? What is the ROI?

  2. Both answers are in the .pdf file. I did it for fun & learning, so it could probably be done for less $ if you pay attention and shop around more. Kevin

  3. Props to you Kevin for an amazing system setup. It looks great and looks like it functions even better. I am trying to do my only solar electric system now, but would love to do a solar water heater in future... that is as long as this project works out. :)

I am using this system for doing my solar: http://tinyurl.com/kgrme6r

    1. So far so good for me.

If it is your 1st DIY effort and you are sensitive to expenses, start small to verify your ability and design. If it goes well, you can scale up and go for the big payback. Kevin

  4. Hello,

Wonderful post. This ideas are so useful and informative for us. I like this project very much. Solar space heating can be 25 or more times more cost effective than solar electric (PV) systems, and the systems are excellent DIY projects. Thanks to sharing it.
